Furry Fetish Freakshow Descends Upon UNC

Furry Freakshow on UNC-Chapel Hill campus

Last Wednesday (Dec 7 2005) I walked out of the library and noticed a group of students talking to a human-sized skunk. The skunk was not talking to the group, but instead kind of miming responses. I had to laugh and quickly reach for my camera. Well, the gig was up and the skunk knew something I didn’t.

Namely that he had two friends waiting around the corner. So, the skunk closed in from the right while his elephant and chipmunk buddies blocked my other escape routes. I thought “This is it. This is the end.” Instead of a vicious thrashing, they just mildly abused me as I passed on by The Pit.

It was at that moment I realized this was not the Great Animal Uprising as predicted in the scriptures. And these were not the brave human-sized animal warriors said to free us from the shackles of the Earth. Instead, they were just Vegas-grade furry fetish perverts intent on frotteurizing members of the UNC community.

Someone really should call the cops.

Photography is Flattery

Dan McCann is flattered

James Rajotte is a New York photographer who appears to be compiling a fairly comprehensive set of linked photographs to exemplify the range of human expression, if you will. Imagine how flattered I was, then, to discover that his link for “Flattered” was to a photograph of mine. Dan McCann partying down at Goodfoot in Portland, OR for Lucas and Ellen’s wedding. Awesome! Thanks, James!

Dan McCann, of course, looks fabulous.

Dude, You're Everywhere!!

“Dude, You’re Everywhere!!” This is what Tom Meggs told me a few years ago and to a degree I realized it, but my understanding of the phenomenon dealt with the rather limited scope of the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. And even then it was pretty much limited to the Open Source and Triangle InterNetWorkers realms.

Now that I have been around long enough to break pretty much every accepted norm on the Internet, it seems that the spider’s web grows vastly more intricate and far-reaching. By far, the most popular things I’ve ever put on the Internet are the stunning Fiona Apple image I put on my weblog (which I stole from somewhere else) and the Puppy Dog Eyes photo of Alva as a beautiful baby dog. From my weblog stats, I can tell that these have been linked an infinite number of times on various fan weblogs, myspace profiles and chatty bulletin boards. What I find most interesting is when images other than these two are passed around.

Probably the coolest thing I’ve seen recently is to have my special moment from a few years ago (dubbed “redneck chic“) chronicled along with other powerful images of Southern heritage. It is a myspace profile called earnhardt4life and it makes me proud to be an American. Well, that and the fact that I made the exclusive WRAL.com Triangle Area Web Logs list. Woot! Take that boing boing!!

There are other stories, but its late and I’m tired. Peace out, little yos!

Thank Goodness! Vida's Back!

Vida\'s Back

I went into CVS to get sunscreen and a greeting card, but while browsing I became entranced by Vida’s Back. Rather the magazine cover announcing BlackMen Presents The Official “Muy Caliente” Vida Guerra Swimsuit Issue! After thinking long and hard about spending eight dollars on a magazine, I ultimately reasoned that the archival value of the magazine content far outweighed any initial investment. Little did I know that Pimps ‘R’ Us had already scanned all the images and put them online. Somehow I still believe that the hard copy was a wise purchase. And I will make sure to bring it along on my next vacation for in-flight perusal.

The Most Important Man in Rock Music Today

Doug Martsch

Considering the number of great rock bands that have broken up or otherwise imploded in recent years, it is easy to conceive how Doug Martsch and his little group from Idaho could usurp the Indie throne and become the guiding force of real rock music in 2005. Built to Spill has definitely been one of the consistently spectacular touring rock acts to catch over the past decade or so. (Well, if you could get a ticket before they sold out to rabid local fans and loyal tour followers.)

Brett Nelson Built to Spill at the Cat\'s Cradle

They played here on Thursday May 19, 2005. I am so thankful to Doug and the gang for regularly visiting the Cat’s Cradle here in downtown Carrboro. Needless to say, I had a blast! And it was an opportunity to test out the new camera in low light club settings. Some of the shots turned out really well. And the others are “artsy.”

Yes I Am Still Alive

Hey everybody! Just a quick note to say “I’m not dead yet!”

I have been enveloped in house hunting and arranging to move out of my cozy neighborhood in Carrboro to the great wide open of Chatham County. I’ve decided to move back to my country roots. If I can’t get a decent Internet connection out there then I may have to start blogging via TCP/IP over carrier pigeon.

Recently, I was able to get some nice shots of Built to Spill at the Cat’s Cradle a few days ago and will post those once I have some free time.

Lots of love to all y’all out there in InternetLand.

and of course, The Roses 2003

I’m hoping to get other new photographs online soon. At this point, I’m taking pictures at a much great rate than I am able to edit and place online. I think I need to hire an assistant for this task. Hmmm….

Punk Rock by Nature

Just like the other 3,000 or so links I come across in a day, I have no idea where this one came from, but I do know that this photograph makes me very happy for many reasons. I don’t know this Mexican Pictures guy from Adam, but his work conveys a wealth of knowledge and understanding. Accordingly, his site has been added to my Photo Blogs roll.
